Training Program Improves Job Opportunities for Mature Workers

People over the age of 55 are learning new skills to prepare them for better jobs, thanks to a program by the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts (ULEM) that is being supported by a Verizon Foundation grant. The Mature Worker Program is also supported by participation from local employers.

The program trains unemployed and underemployed low-income adults, older than 55, in technology and career skills that will make them more qualified and competitive in the job market. Participants receive training in basic Internet usage, Microsoft Word and Outlook, life skills, conflict resolution, time management, stress management and balancing work and family life.

Massachusetts Nonprofits Receive Verizon Foundation Grant for Domestic Violence Prevention and Survivor Support

Thirteen nonprofit agencies tackling the difficult challenges of domestic violence across the state of Massachusetts received a $160,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation. They will use the funds for education, advocacy, support and prevention initiatives.

Verizon New England President Donna Cupelo presented the grants in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month to Holyoke, Massachusetts Mayor Michael Sullivan.

Pilot Program Funded by Verizon Foundation Helps Domestic Violence Victims Use Technology to Protect Vital Information
The National Family Justice Center Alliance (NFJCA) announced the launch of a pilot program, funded by a grant from the Verizon Foundation, to help victims of domestic violence protect and store vital legal and financial information via electronic safety deposit boxes. The announcement was made on Oct. 1 at the Family Justice Center of Hillsborough County, Fla., one of the program's pilot locations. read more >>
